Homemade Pie Conundrum - |
By Sandi and Frosty |
"I can resist anything but temptation!" Those are the famous words of Oscar Wilde during his loquacious career as a playwright. Last year, on the Lewis & Clark Trail out of Astoria, Oregon---every time we passed a home made pie shop, Sandi demanded that we stop and taste the culinary delights. Each time, huckleberry pie, marion berry pie, peanut butter-chocolate pie, lemon pie, apple pie, banana cream pie, blue berry pie and several other pies beckoned from the windows of those local shops. We failed to find discipline enough to avoid those pie shops. As we ordered, our mouths watered in expectation. That first bite, well, sheer salivary, mouthwatering bliss. We stuffed ourselves full of home made pies. We ate until our tummies burst with fullness and outright joy. We savored every single bite. We swallowed those pies with an almost spiritual appreciation. The tastebuds on our tongues summersaulted with ecstasy with each mouthful. Does anyone else suffer from this affliction or should I call it an addiction? At the end, we tipped the wait persons, thanked the pie-making staff and got back onto our bicycles. We pedaled down the highway with a sense the world was our "pie shop" as we conquered adventure highway. I think it was Ben Franklin who said, "God made pies so that men and women would be happy." Or was that beer? Who cares! Sandi and Frosty Wooldridge, Lewis & Clark Trail, eastbound, summer 2016.
